Description
Braddon’s Farmhouse is a late 16th-century farmhouse, potentially incorporating an earlier core. It is constructed of random rubble with some cob, and has been plastered, with a gabled-end slate roof. Originally a three-room plan with a cross passage, the higher end is to the right of the passage, and has a service end front wing. Axial brick stacks back onto the passage, heating the hall, while a left-hand stack heats the service end. The front elevation has three windows; two- and three-light casement windows, the three-light windows dating to the 19th century and with glazing bars. The wing has one 19th-century three-light casement window on its inner face, and other windows are 20th-century replacements. The right-hand end elevation has a two-light window to the first floor and a single-light window below, both 20th-century. The rear outshut has 20th-century windows, with none to the first floor. The left-hand end elevation features two two-light windows and a slate-roofed lean-to. The hall and inner room are now a single room, with a bressumer featuring a pointed doorway-arch marking the remains of a former screen. A large fireplace is present, though its details are not clearly visible. The lower end of the passage retains a plank and muntin screen. The house was unoccupied at the time of a resurvey visit in March 1985 and not inspected internally, and the roof may contain ancient timbers. The farmhouse was formerly known as Hill’s Farmhouse.
