Description
The Oakford War Memorial is a granite structure located on the north side of Rookery Hill, approximately 20 meters east of the junction with Crosspark Hill. It features a plain Latin cross that is octagonal in shape and has a broach-stopped foot. The cross is set on a two-stage base, elevated from the road by a large rubble-stone block. There is a small stepped area on the west side, which includes a curved dwarf wall for access.
The main dedicatory inscription on the upper stage of the base reads: "THIS CROSS IS SET UP IN HONOURED REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN DEFENCE OF THEIR COUNTRY AND EMPIRE 1914 – 1919 1939 – 1945." This inscription continues on the next stage with the words, "IN SORROW, IN GRATITUDE, IN HOPE." Both inscriptions are made with applied metal letters and figures. Additionally, a small brass plaque affixed to the lower stage of the base lists the years 1914 – 1918 with eight names and 1939 – 1945 with four names.
