Description
The Lydford War Memorial is a granite structure located at Rowell Cross, at a road junction. It is approximately 4 meters tall and takes the form of a Latin cross with a rectangular cross section, rising from a three-stepped octagonal base. The steps of the base are chamfered, as are the edges of the cross.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the upper step reads: "TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF THOSE/ FROM THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR KING, COUNTRY AND FREEDOM/ 1914 – 1918." On the left face, there is a dedication for the Second World War that states: "WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945." The two later dedications on the right face read: "FALKLANDS/ 1982/ IRAQ/ 2003." The names of those commemorated are listed below on the corresponding faces of the middle step. All inscriptions are in applied metal lettering and follow a consistent format.
The memorial is surrounded by a small area paved with granite sets and kerbing.
