Description

Upp Cottages are two adjoining cottages, formerly three, likely built in the 18th century. They are whitewashed and rendered, topped with a bitumen-painted slate roof that has gabled ends. The cottages feature an axial stack and a right end stack. The layout consists of a single depth plan, with No 1 on the right having a front door to the left, and No 2 on the left with a front door to the right. Originally, the left half was described as a 'workshop' in the 19th century.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front featuring three windows on one side and two on the other. The porch for No 2 is recessed and has a low wall that is flush with the front elevation, while No 1 has an adjacent front door. The windows are small timber 2-light casements from the 19th and 20th centuries, most with glazing bars, except for one late 20th-century window on the ground floor of No 1.

Although the interior was not inspected, it may still have interesting features. The cottages are an attractive addition to the village, located opposite the entrance to the church. Historical records from the 1871 census, noted by Bentley, indicate that No 2 housed an agricultural labourer, his wife, and his mother-in-law, while No 1 was home to a shoemaker, his laundress wife, and their two children.
