Description

Oakford Manor and Spurway Cottage are likely from the 17th century, with alterations in the early 18th century and remodelling around the early 19th century. The main house is probably built of cob and stone rubble with whitewashed and rendered surfaces and has a 2-span hipped slate roof with deep eaves. The adjoining wing, Spurway Cottage, has a lower roofline and is hipped at one end. There are axial and right-end stacks. The main block is rectangular and double-depth, with a central entrance leading into a stair hall. Spurway Cottage is a lower wing attached to the right.

The front of the main block is symmetrical, with three bays and an attached two-window wing. The central entrance has a fine early 19th-century glazed porch with a cornice, a two-leaf half-glazed door with Gothic arched lights and stained glass. Above the porch is a double-hung sash window with glazing bars and margin glazing. The outer bays have tripartite sash windows with glazing bars. Spurway Cottage faces in a different direction; it has an outshut at the rear with two windows. The left return of the main block has a two-bay garden elevation with glazed garden doors on the ground floor and a verandah supported by posts. First-floor windows are tripartite timber sashes.

The interior was not inspected, but it is said to retain an early 18th-century staircase, and other features of interest may remain. The Spurway family has been associated with Oakford parish and a manorial title for over 700 years.
