Description

Lopes Hall is a villa, now serving as a student hall of residence, built in 1866. It features uncoursed and dressed stone with ashlar quoins, string courses, and dressings, topped by a gabled slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan with the main rooms facing the garden front to the south. It is designed in the Gothic Revival style and stands two storeys tall.

All windows are 2/2-pane sashes with horizontal glazing bars. The south garden front is symmetrically arranged, showcasing carved bargeboards on full-height gables at each end. These gables have polychrome brick and ashlar relieving arches over first-floor 2-light pointed-arched windows, which are set in stone surrounds above stone bay windows. The bay windows have sashes in pointed-arched surrounds with sunk spandrels. The lower central range features similar windows in gabled dormers, also with carved bargeboards, above tall ground-floor windows in similar surrounds with hood moulds that continue into the string courses.

The right-hand elevation is more asymmetrical, featuring a large external stack on the wing and a full-height gabled porch. This porch has a similar first-floor window above a panelled door with an overlight and flanking sashes in pointed-arched surrounds, with hood moulds continuing into the string course. This detail is repeated in the right-hand 2-light window, which has a gabled dormer above, similar to the front.

Although the interior was not inspected, it is noted to have retained a staircase with pierced quatrefoil detail and original joinery, including panelled doors and plaster cornices. Lopes Hall is a finely composed and detailed example of a mid-19th century Gothic Revival villa, part of a group of contemporary villas on the St Germans Estate.
