Description

Stroul Lodge is a villa dating from 1829. It is a 2-storey building with a basement, set in a rectangular plan and built in a Gothic style. The walls are constructed from whinstone and sandstone rubble with harl pointing, and feature ashlar margins and dressings.

The principal, northeast elevation presents three symmetrical bays. A central, advanced square porch, with a crenellated parapet, sits above the basement. Curved stone steps with plain cast-iron balusters lead to a two-leaf, six-panelled door on each return, at the first floor level. A broad bipartite Gothic window with Y-tracery mullions is located on the northeast side. A half-glazed door is at basement level, with a bipartite window above it. Flanking the central porch are full-height bows, each containing two basement windows, two taller windows to the principal floor, and a single window above. Dormers, constructed from wood and covered in slate, have been added above the bows.

The southeast elevation is dominated by a broad, crenellated gable featuring a substantial stack designed to resemble crenellations. A lean-to rubble shed is located at ground level towards the centre left. Three windows are symmetrically placed at the first floor level, with the outer bays being blind. At the principal floor, a large window is shown on the outer right, with a narrower window at the centre, the outer left bay being blind. The ground floor is blank. A broad wallhead stack is positioned at the centre.

The northwest elevation presents a broad, shouldered gable, with a piend-roofed block extending from the centre right. The bays are symmetrically disposed, and the upper floor has blind windows on the outer side. A large window is located on the outer left at the first floor level. The piend-roofed block contains a replacement-glass window at ground level on the northeast elevation, a bipartite window at the first floor, and a parapet. A half-glazed door with a three-pane fanlight is at ground level, with a window directly above. A small window is located to the left of the door.

The southwest (rear) elevation is asymmetrical with five bays and a piend-roofed block to the outer left. A modern wooden bridge provides access to a door on the principal floor, formerly a tall stair window. Replacement glass is found in the broad ground floor window on the outer left. An out-of-character square wooden dormer is present towards the centre left, with a gabled dormer immediately to its right. The piend-roofed block to the outer left shows a raggle of a former lean-to gable at ground level, and a window to the ground floor left. A tall, narrow opening has been blocked at the first floor to the outer left.

The building has 12-pane sash and case windows, including a Y-traceried Gothic window in the porch. The roof is covered with grey slate, with a wallhead stack consisting of six small stacks that mimic crenellations, topped with round cans.

The interior has been converted into flats. It features a flagged hall and a half-glazed tripartite vestibule door with a decorative, segmental fanlight, which is now partially blocked. A Gothick arched tripartite door to the hall, originally spanning the width of the building, has been blocked on the left. A six-panelled door with an entablature is present. There are 8-pane and multi-paned sash and case windows, slate roofing, lead flashings and circular cans to the ridge stacks.
