Description

Ferry Inn Cottage, designed by Edwin Lutyens between 1896 and 1897, is a single-storey, L-plan building situated on sloping ground to the east. Originally, it served as the west wing rear extension of the Ferry Inn and is now a cottage. The exterior features white-painted harl and metal-framed windows positioned directly under the eaves, along with buttress-like engaged piers.

The south elevation has six bays arranged asymmetrically. In the center, there is a boarded door flanked by small windows, with bipartite windows in the bay to the left. A stack rises above the engaged pier to the right of the door, with additional bipartite windows to the right. The two outer right bays lead to a bridge pend/entrance on lower ground that connects to the rear of the building, featuring a tall bipartite window on the outer right.

The west elevation consists of five bays filled with large, quadripartite top-hopper, mullioned windows, and a bipartite window on the outer right.

On the east elevation, there is a gable to the outer left with a picture window at the first floor, a tall window, and two bipartite windows on the right return. Five bays are recessed to the right, featuring a narrow lean-to addition on the outer right. The center bay is slightly advanced, with a round-headed boarded door at ground level and a tall wallhead stack above. The flanking bays have tripartite windows, while the outer right bay is blank at the principal floor and has a boarded door at ground level, along with a lean-to that includes a boarded door.

The north elevation features a mansard-roofed bay beneath a piended roof, with a six-light window.

The windows are made of plate glass and leaded glass. The roof is covered with grey slate and has lead flashings. The building has very tall, harled wallhead stacks capped with slate, featuring regular narrow openings below the cap and slate coping on the offset splay.

The interior was not seen in 1993.
