Description
Greygarth Hall is a villa, now serving as a hall of residence, built around 1880-1890. It is constructed of yellow brick with some sandstone dressings and features hipped slate roofs. The building has an irregular plan and exhibits an eclectic architectural style. It stands two storeys tall with a basement and attics, showcasing a three-bay west front that includes slightly projecting wings flanking a three-storey stair tower. A gabled glazed porch is attached to the right-hand side.
Distinctive architectural features include two string courses between the floors, prominent moulded eaves with modillions, pediments over the bays, and a pyramidal roof on the tower. The tower is highlighted by a large round-headed stair window with an arched centre light and radiating glazing bars, along with a small ornamental stone balcony. Above this, there is a central pilaster strip and two small round-headed windows on the top floor. The left wing features a two-storey canted bay with sashed windows that have margin panes, while the ground floor windows are segmental-headed. The right wing contains a segmental-headed window at ground floor with two round-headed sashed lights, and a tripartite window on the first floor with stone pilasters and narrow sashed lights, two of which are in the centre. The building is topped with various tall corniced chimneys.
At the rear, there is a projecting wing behind the porch, along with a 20th-century single-storey addition attached to the right of the porch. The left return wall includes a large tripartite window on each floor towards the rear and a single-storey wing at the back. Inside, the hall features some elaborate decoration, including doorways with eared architraves, moulded plaster friezes, and a pilastered hallway with tympana adorned with lilies.
