Description
Ward Hall is a villa built around 1840, now serving as an annex to Xaverian College. The building features stucco on brick with sandstone dressings and a hipped slate roof. It has a roughly rectangular plan consisting of a double-depth front block with rear extensions. The structure is two storeys over a basement and has three bays, arranged symmetrically, with a narrow pedimented center that projects forward.
The high stone plinth includes keyed segmental-arched basement windows, rusticated quoins, a first-floor sill-band, a frieze (which has been stripped at the time of the survey), and a dentilled cornice and pediment. A flight of steps leads up to a porch supported by four columns with debased Ionic capitals, flanked by Tuscan pilasters. The porch features a frieze inscribed with "CONCORDIA RES PARVAE CRESCUNT," a moulded cornice on consoles, and a low blocking course.
On the ground floor, there are tall sash windows with pedimented architraves, while the first floor has shorter sash windows with moulded architraves. All windows have margin panes, and all except the rightmost first-floor window have four panes. The left side has a set-back two-window wing, while the right side has one bay with similar fenestration to the front (though the ground floor glazing has been altered) and a short wing with a segmental bow featuring tripartite sash windows on both floors, the ground floor window having a pedimented architrave and both with curved glazing. A 20th-century single-storey addition covers the rear range. The interior has not been inspected.
