Description

65-68 Magdalen Street is a terrace of four townhouses built in the early 19th century. The houses are constructed with mass wall techniques, painted and stuccoed, and feature red brick axial chimneystacks, some of which have round, tapering terracotta chimneypots. The roof is hidden behind a parapet, and cast iron rainwater goods are present.

The terrace is three storeys high, plus attics and basements, and has an asymmetrical design. Nos. 65 and 66 each have a one-bay front, while Nos. 67 and 68 have two-bay fronts. A cornice runs below the parapet. The entrance to No. 65 is located on the left return and features large console brackets and a cornice above a four-panel door, which has a rectangular overlight. There is a bootscraper iron in a recess to the right of the door. Above the door, on the first floor, is a 12-pane hornless sash window, while the second floor window is blind. At attic level, there is a two-light small pane casement window in the gable. The corner of the building curves towards Magdalen Street.

On the Magdalen Street elevation, No. 65 has a horned sash window at ground floor level, and boxed 12-pane hornless sash windows on the first and second floors, with iron trellis balconies at these windows. No. 66 features a 20th-century half-glazed door to the right with a deep rectangular overlight, and a hornless sash window to the left. The first floor has a 12-pane hornless sash window, while the second floor has a horned sash window.

No. 67 is slightly recessed from its neighbours and has a six-panel door to the left with a large square overlight. It features 12-pane hornless sash windows throughout, all with architraves. No. 68 has a six-panel door with a deep rectangular overlight on the left side of the front elevation and horned sash windows throughout, with architraves on the second floor windows. Grilles are present in the pavements to light the basement windows. The interior has not been inspected.
