Description

The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, opened in 1742-3, is an early example of a provincial hospital. The original red brick front, completed by 1758, is three stories high and features rusticated quoins. In 1772, the central three windows were recessed and a pediment was added. The present central doorway dates from 1859. A cupola from 1742 sits atop the building. Area railings were added in 1831, and the Halford wing was constructed in 1858. The front facade is articulated with a rhythm of five, three, five, three, three, five, five windows. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars and elliptical heads, set within flush frames. A dentil cornice runs along the top, and the roof is slate. The interior includes a Board Room with original panelling from 1753. Numbers 15 to 28, 30 to 36, 38 to 40, 45, 46, and 52 form a group around the hospital.
