Description
39 and 40 Magdalen Street is a late 17th century or early 18th century house that has been significantly altered. It is a three-storey building with a three-window front. The façade features an enriched entablature and cornice, with a pediment above. Corinthian capitals are present where pilasters are now missing. The front is currently covered in stucco. There are two round-headed windows, likely added later, while the others have mostly been altered to 19th century sash windows. Two shop fronts have been inserted into the building. The doorcase retains fluted pilasters, a fanlight, and voussoirs. Inside, there is some contemporary panelling in the hall, but the rest of the interior has been altered. The roof is made of asbestos. Nos 39 and 40, along with Nos 42 to 46 (consecutive), and Nos 49 and 50, form a group.
