Description

Wynard’s Hospital is a complex of almshouses and a chapel founded in 1435. The original buildings were largely rebuilt in the 17th century and subsequently altered in the late 18th century by Sir William Kennedy. Further restoration and alterations occurred in 1863, most notably to the entrance arch of the Chapel and the upper storeys of the houses.

The hospital comprises twelve two-storey almshouses arranged around a cobbled courtyard. The almshouses on the west side are raised, with a terraced pavement in front. The Chapel, dating from 1436, has undergone considerable restoration. The buildings are constructed of Heavitree stone. The complex includes Kennaway tablets and a mace-holder. The hospital has been restored and is now used as council offices.
