Description

Ernsborough Court is a large villa, dating from approximately the 1860s and 1870s. It was formerly known as Ernsborough House and shown as such on Ordnance Survey maps. After the Second World War, it was used as a hospital before being subdivided into flats in 1980. The building is constructed of red brick with painted stucco dressings, topped with a hipped slate roof featuring red ridge tiles. The chimney shafts are rendered and have bands, and some rainwater goods are made of cast iron. The design is Italianate in style.

The building has a roughly U-shaped main range, with a prominent entrance situated between projecting left and right wings. Rooms were originally heated by axial chimneystacks. The main block is three storeys high with basements, while the front wings are two storeys tall. Deep eaves are present, featuring a stuccoed eavesband and moulded brackets to the verges and eaves. Stucco bands are also found at the first and second floor levels. Windows have architraves; some are pilastered and round-headed with keyblocks, others are eared and shouldered, and some include cornices and brackets. Most windows are 12-pane hornless sash windows, though some have been replaced in the 20th century. A single 2-light small-pane casement window is found on the first floor of the main range's left side. A Tuscan loggia is located between the front wings, with a balcony above featuring pierced stone balustrade. The right return front is the primary facade, with a 3-bay arrangement. The side of the left front wing is symmetrical, with three bays and the centre bay projecting and gabled, topped with a broken pediment. The tall main block to the right also projects centrally, with blind recesses set against the chimney stacks.

The interior has not been inspected but may contain features of interest.

Ernsborough Court is considered one of the best examples of a large mid-19th century Italianate brick and stucco villa in Exeter.
