Description
The Church of St Giles is a parish church with a 15th-century west tower. The rest of the church was rebuilt in 1862 and designed by T.T. Bury. The west tower has two stages, with north angle buttresses featuring set-offs, battlements, finials, and gargoyles. It includes two light bell openings, a four-centred arch west window, and a door. There is a polygonal stair turret on the south side. The nave, north and south aisles, and chancel, built in 1862, are in the perpendicular style and feature an open timber-framed south porch. The church is constructed of coursed stone with freestone dressings, and has slate and tiled roofs.
Inside, there are four bay north and south arcades supported by octagonal piers with moulded capitals and double chamfered arches. The nave and chancel have four-centred arch wagon roofs. There is a circa 15th-century octagonal font with quatrefoil panels. Monuments in the north aisle include one for Thomas Southcott from 1735, featuring Corinthian pilasters and a broken pediment with a cartouche flanked by angels, and another for Mrs Agnes Tucker from 1788 by Harris of London, which includes a draped urn. The Royal Arms of Charles II is fixed to the roof of the north aisle, and there is a hatchment over the tower arch.
