Description

This listing describes two large barns and a linhay located 20 meters northwest of Newhall Farmhouse, dating from the early 19th century and later. The buildings are constructed of cob and random volcanic trap rubble, which is partly whitewashed, and feature dry slate roofs at the gabled ends, with an asbestos-tiled roof on the northeast elevation.

The large barn faces the farmhouse and has cob end and rear walls, with a stone front. It includes two opposed, slightly projecting wagon porches with plank doors and external stairs leading to the loft. Attached to the front wall is a gabled timber dovecot with four tiers and 18 nesting boxes. The barn has four-light timber windows on both the ground and first floors, with the lower windows set under heavy timber lintels. An external flight of stairs is located to the right.

At a right angle to this barn, forming a T-plan, is a long range that encloses the northeast side of both the main farmyard, which includes the farmhouse, and a rear yard featuring a 12-stall linhay. The northeast elevation of this block is covered by a continuous roof, which is interrupted at the center by a large gable with overhanging eaves that provide shelter for external access. There are three 3-light timber windows on each floor to the right of the northeast elevation and two 3-light windows to the left, with the ground floor windows positioned under heavy timber lintels. All windows are widely spaced and small. This group of buildings is arranged around three sides of a farmyard, with Newhall Farmhouse on the fourth side.
