Description
This is a barn and adjoining linhay located approximately 20 metres north of Rudge Farmhouse. The barn dates back to the 16th century and was reroofed and partly rebuilt in the mid-19th century. The linhay is entirely from the mid-19th century, constructed of cob on rubble footings, with some 19th-century rubble rebuilding to the barn. The barn has a slate roof, while the linhay and a round house feature corrugated iron roofs. Both structures face south into the farmyard and back onto the road, with the barn on the left and the linhay on the right.
The barn includes a cob round house at the rear and large opposing double doors leading to the threshing floor. To the left of the door, there is a short projecting midstrey wall, with rubble walling further left. There is no midstrey wall on the right, only a 20th-century breezeblock buttress. Above the front door, there are four pigeon holes. The roof is hipped to the left. The rear of the barn features both short projecting midstrey walls and a loading hatch to the left, while to the right is a round horse engine house with a semi-conical roof that houses a massive beam but no machinery.
The linhay consists of six bays (Alcock's Type T1), with posts resting on 20th-century concrete and some original stone pads. It has a weatherboarded front and a roof that is slightly lower than that of the adjoining barn. The linhay is slightly terraced into the hillside, and its cob rear wall includes two doorways and a loading hatch, broken by a series of cob buttresses. The barn and linhay are included for their group value.
