Description
Calves Bridge is a road bridge over the River Datch, dating from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. It is constructed of volcanic rubble, with squared blocks used only for the abutments and cutwaters. The bridge features two spans, consisting of two segmental plain arches made with rubble voussoirs. The abutments are angled back towards the bank only on the upstream (north) side. There are central pointed cutwaters on both sides, which rise only to road level and have semi-pyramid tops. The rubble parapet slightly rises to the center, following the incline of the road, and the parapet walls sweep outwards on each side. At this point, the River Datch also forms the boundary between the parish and Lapford Parish.
