Description
The barns and cow house, dating to the late 18th and early 19th centuries, are constructed of rubble limestone with large quoins and have graduated slate roofs. They form an L-shaped range situated to the south of the Elliscale Farm farmyard. The easternmost barn is a tall, one-story, four-bay structure. It has a waggon entrance facing west with boarded doors, a wooden lintel, and a slated canopy supported by brackets. A blocked window sits to the left, and external stone steps with an iron handrail are to the right. Attached to the west side is a five-bay bank barn with a cow house below, and a third barn of approximately three bays, set slightly forward and partially subterranean. The bank barn features three cast-iron columns to a pentice, now covered by corrugated-iron sheeting. It has five boarded doors and four casement windows below, with an altered window on the first floor to the left and two rows of vents. The right gable has copings and a weathervane. The third barn has three casements to the lower floor and one above, with various vent holes, shaped kneelers, and gable copings on the right. The right return has a waggon entrance with boarded doors and a wooden lintel, the canopy having been removed. A similar waggon entrance is located at the west gable of the bank barn. Internally, the easternmost barn has an arched winnowing door to the rear and three principal rafter trusses with double purlins. The bank barn retains a cow house layout with two manure passages and three feeding passages, along with four principal rafter trusses, two of which have been altered. A later cow house to the rear of the easternmost barn is not considered to be of particular interest.
