Description

Ivy Cottage is a cottage dating from the 17th century, with a 19th-century rear wing. It is constructed of cob with a stone plinth, rendered, and features a thatched roof with gabled ends, while the rear wing is made of Killerton stone and has a dry slate roof with gabled ends. The cottage likely started as a single-cell structure, and the current internal divisions are made of brick, which may have replaced earlier timber and lath partitions.

The building has two storeys. The front features a porch to the left of centre, made of timber with a tiled roof. There are two 19th or 20th-century three-light timber casement windows on either side of the porch, and above them is a two-light window under boarded eyebrow eaves. On the right side elevation, there are two buttresses added around 1932, and at the first floor, there are two small single-light windows on either side of an internal end stack, each with four leaded panes and glazing bars. The left-hand elevation has a similar one-light window that is now blocked and has been replaced by a two-light timber casement window.

The roof structure includes two substantial principals that are morticed and side-pegged at the apex, with a diagonal ridge-piece. The purlins are trenched, and the rafters and tie beam are also side pegged and morticed. These elements appear to be set well down in the walls and may be raised crucks.
