Description

This is an outhouse located approximately 1.5 metres south of Broad Oak Farmhouse, dating from the 17th century and reroofed in the 19th century. It is constructed of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with some brick patching, and features a slate roof. The building is aligned on a north-south axis and is situated close to the back of the farmhouse. It has a two-room plan with a staircase between the rooms. The northern room, nearest to the farmhouse, is believed to have served as a cellar or cider store, while the larger southern room was likely a stable or similar space. Above, there is a hayloft or bunkhouse. The outhouse is two storeys high, with doorways at each end and a hayloft loading hatch above the southern doorway. On the east side, there is a doorway slightly right of centre leading to the staircase. The west side features two first-floor windows, both of which are 17th-century oak-framed with chamfered mullions and unglazed. The roof is gable-ended. Inside, the carpentry is plain, with ground floor crossbeams that are roughly chamfered and likely date from the 17th century. The roof was replaced in the 19th century with low pitch A-frame trusses with plate yokes. The exact function of the outhouse is unclear, but its location suggests it may have been used as a cellar or store. If the first-floor windows are original and not reset during the 19th century, this indicates a potential domestic use for the upper level, despite it being unheated. It may have served as a bunkhouse for itinerant workers.
