Description

Irelands is a former farmhouse that likely has an earlier core but was refurbished with a new crosswing in the late 19th century. The 17th-century section is constructed of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with stone rubble stacks topped with plastered brick and a thatched roof. The 19th-century wing is built of stretcher bond brick, featuring a brick stack and a red tile roof. The farmhouse has an L-shaped plan, with the main block facing south-south-west. The left (west) end room was likely a parlour, while the center room served as the kitchen, with an axial stack between them providing back-to-back fireplaces. The lobby entrance is located in front of this stack. The right end room of the main block was probably used as a dairy or buttery. The right (east) end features the 19th-century two-room plan crosswing, which projects forward and is served by a stack in the wall between the wing and the main block. The main block appears to have a 17th-century layout, but an internal inspection was not available during the survey, so it is unclear if the house is older. It stands two storeys high with a lean-to outshot on the left end.

The exterior of the main block has a nearly symmetrical front with four ground floor and three first floor windows, all late 19th-century casements with glazing bars and thatch eyebrows over the upper windows. The front doorway is roughly central and features a late 19th-century four-panel door behind a contemporary gabled porch supported by plain posts. The main roof is hipped to the left. The front end of the wing has late 19th-century transomed windows, and its roof is gable-ended. The interior was not available for inspection during the survey, but it is reported to contain 17th-century carpentry details, including clean jointed cruck roof trusses.
