Description
Barrats is a cottage, originally two separate cottages, dating from the late 18th century or 19th century. It was modernised when the cottages were combined in the mid-20th century. The building is constructed of plastered local stone rubble, possibly with cob, and features stone rubble and brick with plastered chimney shafts, topped by a thatched roof.
The plan consists of a pair of mirror-image cottages built alongside the lane, facing west. Each cottage originally had a larger heated room on the front with a rear corner stack. The building is two storeys high and has an overall four-window front, featuring 20th-century casements with glazing bars. It appears that two of the ground floor windows are blocking former doorways. The current entrance is located at the left (south) end and includes a 20th-century door behind a contemporary porch. The roof is hipped at both ends. The interior has not been inspected but is reported to have no exposed carpentry.
