Description
Higher Westcott Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with possible earlier origins, and was refurbished in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick, primarily featuring local handmade red brick from the late 17th to early 18th century with decorative burnt headers, although the front has been refaced with 19th-century brick. The farmhouse has brick stacks and chimney shafts, topped with a thatched roof.
The house faces south and has a 2 or 3-room plan with an entrance hall at the left (west) end. There is an axial stack in the room next to the entrance hall, and a right gable-end stack. Since the interior was not inspected during the survey, the specific layout and any structural developments remain undetermined. The building is two storeys high, featuring integral lean-to out-shots and a 19th-century lean-to outshot on the left end.
The exterior has an irregular four-window front with 19th and 20th-century casements that include glazing bars. The front doorway, located at the left end, features a 19th-century six-panel door beneath a contemporary flat-roofed hood supported by shaped raking struts. The main roof is half-hipped on the left and gable-ended on the right. Although the interior was not accessible for inspection, it is reported to contain "old beams" and is suspected to have significant features, suggesting that an internal inspection should be conducted before any alterations to avoid damaging early carpentry or joinery elements. There is a possibility that the farmhouse has origins dating back to the 16th century or early 17th century.
