Description

Lyme Cottage and Riverside Cottage are two dwellings that were originally a single house built in the late 16th or 17th century, with later alterations. The structure is made of flint and limestone rubble, featuring squared quoins, a gabled thatched roof, and brick end stacks. Lyme Cottage was the hall of the original house, with a now-blocked lobby entrance to the left, adjacent to Pear Tree Cottage, and the former service end, now Riverside Cottage, to the right. The building has two storeys and a four-window range, with 19th-century two and three-light casements that have leaded panes. There is a similar two-light casement at the blocked doorway on the left and a 20th-century door to the right of centre. A 19th-century outshut with a tile roof projects to the right, while a thatched rear outshut provides access to Riverside Cottage on the right.

Inside, Lyme Cottage features a jointed-cruck truss with trenched purlins and dowel holes in the principals and collar from a removed partition. It has a chamfered ground-floor beam with lamb's tongue stops, an open fireplace with an oven, and a chamfered bressumer and beam in the lobby next to the stack, which includes a rebated arched doorhead and mortices for a stud partition. Riverside Cottage contains a stop-chamfered beam and an open fireplace with a bressumer, though the first floor was not seen.
