Description

Sideways is a house, originally dating to the late 17th century, which has been divided into two cottages. It is constructed of roughly coursed limestone and marlstone rubble. The roof is steeply pitched, kinked towards the rear, and originally thatched, now covered with concrete tiles. The house has two storeys and formerly contained an attic, which was lit with dormer windows. The eaves are punctuated by three 19th-century casement windows, with a leaded central window. On the ground floor, a 19th-century casement window is paired with a boarded door set within a 20th-century timber lean-to porch on the left side. A boarded door with a lean-to hood is located on the right side, flanked on either side by casement windows, the right one being a three-light design. All openings are topped with wooden lintels, and the doors have glazed panels. The house has integral end stacks: the left stack has a 20th-century brown brick shaft, and the right stack has a 19th-century red brick shaft. The gable ends of the former attic have been infilled. A 19th-century lean-to extends from the left gable end. An infilled segmental-headed doorway connects the house to Clements (a separate listed building). The interior of only the right-hand cottage (No.1) was inspected, revealing chamfered spine beams and joists in the ground-floor room, and wide floorboards on the first floor.
