Description
This is a row of four cottages located on Town Hill in Broadclyst, dating from the 18th century. The cottages are constructed of cob on a stone plinth, with a rendered finish and a thatched gabled end roof. The left-hand gable end has been rebuilt in red brick. The buildings are two storeys high and feature two red brick end stacks along with four external stacks at the rear.
The front of the cottages has four doors and seven windows on the ground floor, all of which are 19th and 20th century timber casements with two and three lights. There are six similar two-light windows on the first floor, all positioned under eyebrow eaves with boarded gables. The gable end includes two two-light casements at the first floor, with the gable walling remaining unbroken below.
Internally, No. 2 has a ground floor room with one cross beam that is chamfered and lacks stops. Cased rafters, which were formerly exposed, can be seen in the bedrooms and suggest that the roof may have been heightened. The cottages are included for their group value.
