Description
The Sail Loft is a sail loft and warehouse that also serves as a dwelling, dating from 1810. It is constructed of stone rubble with dressed stone quoins and brick window arches, while the second floor is rendered. The building features a slate roof with coped gable ends, a small brick gable-end stack, and a later brick lateral stack.
The structure is rectangular with five bays, and only the south bay has partitions on the ground and first floors for use as a dwelling. It stands three storeys tall with five bays. The ground floor has small windows with cambered brick arches and keystones, and some window frames include glazing bars. There is a central wide door on the ground floor of the east elevation, along with a loading door on the first floor above, which is accessed by stone stairs. A later loading door is present on the first floor of the west side, and another loading door on the second floor of the north end has been converted into a window. The south gable end features two windows on each floor, with the ground and first floor windows boarded over, and a plank door on the right.
Inside, the building has unchamfered cross-beams and narrow joists. The stud partition walls at the south end are partly infilled with brick and partly boarded over. The dwelling area at the south end includes matchboarded walls, panelled doors, and mid-19th century chimneypieces. The roof is a five-bay structure with king-post trusses and angle-struts.
A circa 1870 illustration shows this building with the name Knight sail makers inscribed on the east side.
