Description
The Sea Wall in Exmouth was built between 1841 and 1842 by John Smeaton and James Green, the County surveyor. In 1868, a parapet was added, and the wall was extended in 1870. Constructed from Devon limestone ashlar, the lower courses below the beach sand level are made of sandstone ashlar. The wall features a deep batter, and the 1868 parapet is made of Devon limestone rubble. The 1870 extension to the west consists of vertically set Devon limestone blocks with a pleasing curved batter. There are two flights of steps, known as the Imperial Steps and Temple Steps, leading from the beach up to the Esplanade. The Sea Wall facilitated land reclamation from the sea, contributing to the development of Exmouth as a Victorian seaside town.
