Description
Sidmouth House, formerly known as The Lodge, is a two-storey house dating from around 1800, located on Cotmaton Road. The building is constructed of light brown brick and features a bowed center with a ripped slate roof and wide eaves. Single-storey wings were added around 1830, and a first floor was added to the east wing in a similar style later in the 19th century. A stucco band runs between the storeys and continues as a cornice on the west wing, with a parapet and coping above. The main block has four windows, while the wings have three, all featuring recessed sashes with intact glazing bars. The ground floor includes French windows with Venetian shutters. The rear elevations are stuccoed, with the main body of the house extending back to the north. Between the main body and the east wing is a two-storey bowed entrance bay with a parapet and coping, which has three windows on the first floor and two on the ground floor, all with recessed sashes and intact glazing bars. The entrance features a central Doric porch with an entablature and a recessed door with six flush panels and reeded surrounds. The interior is notable, particularly the staircase which has plain balusters and a continuous moulded handrail, along with an oval domed light in the well.
