Description
The Royal Glen Hotel is a Grade I listed building located on Glen Road. Originally named Woolbrook Glen, it was the residence of the Duke and Duchess of Kent and their infant daughter, Princess Victoria, during their stay in December 1819 and January 1820. The Duke of Kent passed away here.
The hotel is a two-storey stuccoed house, with a single storey at the southwest corner due to the higher ground level. It features a crenellated parapet and a garden front with four windows, which include Gothic casements, although some of the geometric pattern glazing bars have been removed. The royal arms are displayed in the center of the front.
The single-storey southwest end of the building is bowed and has Gothic French windows supported by delicate iron trellis supports beneath a tent-roofed verandah. The entrance front includes a commemorative tablet from 1897 and a well-designed Gothic porch, featuring trefoils in the spandrels of the arched openings and an iron balustrade on the parapet. The doorway has a pointed head and is surrounded by rustic posts and flintwork.
Later additions to the rear of the building are made in a sympathetic style, maintaining the crenellated parapet and featuring two-light geometrically glazed casements with thin drip moulds above.
