Description

Rock Mill is a house and adjoining water mill located in Membury, dating from the 16th or 17th century for the house and the 18th or 19th century for the water mill, which is dated 1838. The house is constructed of stone rubble and partly colour washed, featuring a thatched roof with half-hipped and gabled ends. It has an L-shaped plan with a wing to the east, two storeys, and a two-window range with 20th-century casements. The left-hand opening is two storeys high, weatherboarded, and has a 20th-century casement inserted. There is also a 20th-century lean-to porch in the angle and a 20th-century conservatory on the gable end. The house has a stone ridge chimney stack and a brick stack at the gable end.

Inside, there are stopped and chamfered ceiling beams, and a plank and muntin screen that has likely been reset or imported. The adjoining water mill, probably from the 18th century, has a ground storey of dressed stone and later stone rubble above, with a datestone from 1838. It features a half-hipped pantile roof, three storeys, and two casement windows on each floor of the end wall, along with a gabled dormer on the north side. There is a circa 19th-century gabled wing on the north side with a reset datestone reading "1795". The living space has been extended into the mill, which currently contains no machinery.
