Description
SY 18 NE BRANSCOMBE
7/7 Stables and Wash House - approximately 3 metres east of Edge Barton Manor GV II Stables and wash house. Late C17 or C18, refurbished in the C19 and C20. Local stone rubble although the stables include a high proportion of probably reused squared blocks of Beerstone; interlocking tile roof, formerly thatch. Plan: the stables and wash house face south and, at the rear, are terraced into the hillside. The wash house is at the left (west) end. It is a single storey 1-room plan building with a C19 rear lateral stack. It is lower than the stables adjoining to right (east). Stables have haylofts over. Exterior: the wash house has a central front door flanked by casement windows. The stables have 3 doorways. The left and right doorways have a casement window to left of them and the centre doorway has a similar window to right. 2 hayloft loading hatches and another to rear off the terrace. All the joinery detail here is C20. Roof is gable-ended and steps down from stables to wash house. Interior: the stables have plain but sturdy carpentry detail including a roof structure of A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars. It maybe contemporary with the barn (q.v.) adjoining to east. The wash house has no exposed carpentry detail and maybe a C19 addition.
