Description

The stables and wash house, located approximately 3 metres east of Edge Barton Manor, date from the late 17th century or 18th century and were refurbished in the 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed from local stone rubble, with the stables featuring a significant amount of reused squared blocks of Beerstone. The roof is covered with interlocking tiles, which were previously thatch.

The stables and wash house face south and are built into the hillside at the rear. The wash house is situated at the left (west) end and is a single-storey, one-room building with a 19th-century lateral stack at the rear. It is lower than the adjoining stables on the right (east), which have haylofts above.

On the exterior, the wash house has a central front door flanked by casement windows. The stables have three doorways, with casement windows to the left of the left and right doorways, and a similar window to the right of the central doorway. There are two hayloft loading hatches, as well as another hatch at the rear off the terrace. All joinery details are from the 20th century. The roof is gable-ended and slopes down from the stables to the wash house.

Inside, the stables feature plain but sturdy carpentry, including a roof structure made of A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars. This may be contemporary with the barn adjoining to the east. The wash house lacks exposed carpentry details and may be a 19th-century addition.
