Description
Clematis Cottage and Gill Cottage are two cottages, likely built in the late 18th to early 19th century. They are constructed from plastered cob and stone rubble, with some areas of exposed stone rubble. The cottages feature stone rubble stacks topped with 19th and 20th-century brick and have thatched roofs.
The cottages are situated at the end of a row and face northeast along the lane. Clematis Cottage is on the left (southeast) and has a main block with a two-room plan, consisting of an unheated left room and a right room that is heated by an axial stack in the shared party wall with Gill Cottage. Additionally, Clematis Cottage has a secondary two-room plan block that projects at right angles to the rear of the right room, featuring a projecting gable-end stack.
Gill Cottage, located on the right (northwest), is the end cottage of the row and also has a two-room plan. Its left room is heated by the same axial stack shared with Clematis Cottage, while the right room has a gable-end stack. Both cottages are two storeys high.
The exterior displays an irregular four-window front with 20th-century casements that have glazing bars, with two windows for each cottage. Each cottage has a front doorway with a 20th-century part-glazed door. Gill Cottage features a third ground floor window that seems to block a former doorway, suggesting it may have originally been two one-room plan cottages. To the left, the roof extends over the adjoining Jasmine Cottage, while to the right, it ends in a gable.
The interiors were not inspected during the survey. Clematis Cottage and Gill Cottage are part of a notable group of thatch-roofed buildings that contribute to the character of the hamlet of Street.
