Description

Compass Cottage is a house that was converted from a disused Wesleyan chapel, which dates back to 1831. The conversion to a house occurred in the early 20th century. It is constructed from local Salcombe stone rubble with ashlar dressings and features stone rubble or brick stacks topped with brick chimney shafts, all beneath a slate roof. The former chapel is oriented on a north-south axis, with its main entrance located at the north end facing the road.

The building has been transformed into a four-room plan house, consisting of two rooms wide and two rooms deep, with a central axial stack. It stands two storeys tall. The north end showcases a large central doorway with a relieving arch above, which contains a 20th-century panelled door. To the right of this doorway is an inserted window, along with another window in an original opening above, both featuring 20th-century casements with glazing bars. A plaque in the gable reads "Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, 1831." The roof is gable-ended, adorned with ashlar coping and topped with ball apex finials.

Both sides of the cottage have two-window fronts with 20th-century casements. The east side has a more regular arrangement of windows, and near the rear, there is a doorway with an early 20th-century four-panel door, accompanied by a porch supported on turned balusters. The interior has not been inspected. This former chapel is part of a group of mostly thatched-roof buildings that make up the hamlet of Street.
