Description
This outbuilding, located approximately 15 metres south-west of Barton Town Farmhouse, is currently used as stables and a store-shed. It was originally part of Barton Farm before the current farmhouse was built in the late 19th century. The structure dates back to the 17th century, with a possible addition from the 18th century at the left end. It is constructed of stone rubble and features slate roofs of two different heights with gable ends.
There is a large rubble stack with slated weathering at the left gable end of the original range, and a stack with a demolished shaft at the left end of the 18th-century addition. The building was originally rectangular in plan and may have been a single cell or small two-cell farmhouse, with a gable entry on the south side of the stack and a winder staircase on the north side. It has two storeys, with two windows on each floor of the main range; the bottom left window is from the 19th century, while the others are from the 20th century.
The extension to the left is slightly recessed and has a 20th-century casement above a window opening, with a plank shutter to the left of the stable plank door. There is a blocked gable entry and a blocked doorway leading into a lean-to with a corrugated iron roof at the right gable end. A slate roof covers a low dairy outshut at the rear, which has a plank door. Inside, the upper floors have been removed, but there is a scroll-stopped chamfered lintel above the fireplace, and the roof timbers have been replaced.
