Description

Barton Abbey stables, now an outbuilding, were built in the late 17th century and remodeled in the mid 19th century. The structure is made of coursed limestone rubble with squared and ashlar dressings, topped with a gabled stone-coped stone slate roof. It features a late 17th century moulded stone ridge stack and a similar mid 19th century stack at the left end. The building is two storeys high and has a four-window range. Steps lead down to three doorways that have flat stone arches. Above these doorways are label moulds over mid 19th century hollow-moulded stone-mullioned and arch-headed two-light windows. The roof is topped with a belfry that has a pyramidal lead roof and a weathercock. At the rear, there is a 17th century chamfered round-arched doorway and a hollow-moulded arched light.

Additionally, there is a limestone rubble wall with moulded coping and a Tudor-style archway with a moulded cornice that extends approximately 55 metres from the front of the right corner. The stables also contain reset medieval mouldings, likely taken from the former manor house of Sesswells Barton, which was located nearby.
