Description

The Church of St Michael is a parish church built in 1877 by Hayward of Exeter. It is constructed from coursed stone with freestone dressings and features slate roofs. This large church is designed in the Early English and Decorated styles. The nave includes a four-light Decorated west window and multifoil round clerestory windows. There are low north and south aisles with Decorated three-light windows, and the chancel has a Decorated five-light east window. The church also has north and south transepts and a tower at the north-west corner, which is built in four stages. The top stage features twin lancet bell openings with colonettes, an embattled parapet, and a polygonal corner turret. Originally, the tower had a large stone spire with lucarnes. A vestibule spans the west end, showcasing a three-bay Early English arcade. Inside, there is a four-bay north and south arcade supported by marble piers with foliated capitals. The chancel arch is adorned with marble shafts, and the nave roof features arched braces to collars and wind braces. The church contains contemporary furnishings, including choir stalls, a stone pulpit, and a font.
