Description
The Beer War Memorial Cross is a granite structure located outside the Church of St Michael’s, at the junction of Fore Street and Church Hill, and opposite the Conduit Head. This memorial cross stands 6 meters tall and features a floriated cross head. The cross shaft rises from a square pedestal, which is set on a three-stepped, octagonal base. The churchyard walls in front of the memorial are cut back, with a stepped enclosure that is separated from the road by railings and a gate.
The main dedicatory inscription, made of applied metal letters on the front face of the pedestal, reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE GALLANT MEN FROM THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WARS 1914 – 1919 1939 – 1945." The names of those who served in the First World War are listed on the sides of the pedestal, while the front face of the upper step of the base bears the phrase "THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD." The names of those who served in the Second World War are recorded on the middle stage of the base.
