Description
The Church of St James is a church built in 1844, with the tower added in 1861, designed by John Hayward of Exeter. It is constructed of coursed squared limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and has a concrete plain-tile roof. The church features a 4-bay aisleless nave with a short chancel, a west tower, a south porch, and a vestry located to the north of the chancel. The design is in the late 14th century style. The east and west windows consist of three traceried lights, while the other windows have two lights, except for a cinquefoil lancet in the south wall of the chancel. The bays are marked by buttresses, and the windows are topped with hood-moulds that have carved heads; the east window includes "I H S" on shields in panels beneath the lights.
The west tower has three unequal stages, with the top stage featuring pairs of traceried two-light openings, where the central pier rises from gables above the clock faces. It has a crenellated parapet with panelled bases for missing corner pinnacles, and a string course adorned with carved heads, foliage, and winged gargoyles at the angles. Inside, the chancel and tower arches have continuous mouldings, and the roofs are panelled, supported by carved corbels. A medieval piscina bowl has been reused in the chancel. The oak fittings include an elaborate reredos from 1901 by Hems of Exeter. The glass in the east window and the two eastern nave windows is from 1854 by Willement, while the glass in the west window and the window to the west of the porch is from 1869 by Heaton, Butler and Bayne.
