Description
This is a detached building, now used as a store, but it was originally a serge-making workshop from the 18th century. The structure is made of roughcast cob on stone footings, with some brick patching. It features a thatched roof with both hipped and gabled ends. There is an end window with an 18th-century surround and one stanchion above a renewed doorway, which has a planked door with an old lock and corners decorated with trefoils. A side entrance, likely added in the 19th century, is also present. A Sun Life Assurance policy inventory from 1760 indicates that the 'cellar' next to Samuel Dagworthy's dwelling at Woodbury Salterton, which is Brown's Farmhouse, was used for serge making. As of 1985, the house is still occupied by the same family, who refer to this building as 'the cellar'.
