Description
The well house and water conduit, located 110 metres south of the primary school in Woodbury Salterton, was built around 1847 at the expense of Marianne Pidsley. The well house is constructed from coursed dressed limestone and features a square block shape with a moulded plinth and cornice. The angles are chamfered, and it is topped with a tent-shaped cap that has a finial. Above the water outlet on the north side, there is a trefoil-headed pointed arch with a hood mould, and above this arch is a biblical text. The conduit itself is lined with brick. This structure was part of a series of improvements initiated by Marianne Pidsley in response to a cholera epidemic that affected Woodbury Salterton in 1832, which also included the school and Holy Trinity Church.
