Description

Metherells is an early 18th century end house, likely built around 1706, situated in a row of three. It has undergone later additions and alterations. The exterior is brick, stuccoed to resemble ashlar, with a slate roof. The roof is hipped at the left-hand end and adjoins Killrush to the right, but with a lower ridge line. Originally, the house was probably a two-room, through-passage dwelling with a parallel rear range under a separate span roof, creating an overall double-depth plan. A staircase, dating from around 1800, is positioned within the central entrance hall of the front range. There is an external brick stack to the left and an axial stack to the right. The house has two storeys. The front facade has a symmetrical three-window arrangement, featuring a central two-light dormer window with a raked roof. The first floor has two tripartite sash windows with twelve panes each, flanked by a single twelve-pane sash window. All sash windows are hornless. The ground floor has similar tripartite sash windows on either side of a central porch, which has moulded cornices, Tuscan columns, and pilasters, along with a half-glazed door. Inside, a continuous curved open-well staircase rises through the entire height of the house to the attic, with stick balusters, wreathed handrails, and a carved string. Some original panelled doors, dating from around 1700, are present, along with 19th century internal panelled shutters.
