Description

Willow Cottage is a house that likely dates from the early to mid 18th century, possibly involving the remodelling of an earlier building. It was enlarged in the late 18th century or early 19th century and has undergone alterations. The structure is built from coursed squared sandstone with quoins and features a scored stucco facade and a stone slate roof. It has an L-shaped plan, consisting of a three-unit front range with an addition to the rear of the right-hand half.

The house is two storeys tall and has three bays, with cellars included. The doorway is slightly offset to the left of centre and has a plain surround. There is a cellar doorway and a window on the lower level at the left end. The ground floor has two three-light windows, and there are three similar windows above, all featuring flat-faced flush mullions and plain surrounds. A corniced chimney is located at the left gable, while a larger chimney sits on the ridge at the junction of the second and third units. The gable copings are adorned with moulded kneelers.

At the rear, there is a three-light window on the first floor and a round-headed stairlight with tracery in the head. The addition, which has a cat-slide roof, contains one three-light window on each floor (the upper one has one blocked light) and a blocked taking-in door at the right-hand end.

Inside, evidence of remodelling includes an exceptionally thick stone partition wall between the second and third units, a wide and irregular entrance hall in the centre, and a fine dog-leg staircase that rises from this hall. The staircase features an open string, very slender turned balusters, and a ramped handrail. Additionally, there are fielded panel doors, including one that passes through the stone partition wall and has H-L hinges.
