Description
This is a K6 telephone kiosk, designed in the 1930s and constructed of cast iron, painted red with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides. The top panels feature applied crowns, not perforated, and the kiosk displays rectangular white signs reading "TELEPHONE" beneath the shallow-curved roof. The internal equipment is modernised, and the kiosk appears to be in good condition.
The K6 design was developed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 for the General Post Office, to commemorate King George V’s Silver Jubilee. It evolved from his earlier K2 design and was intended to be more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective to manufacture. Over 70,000 K6 kiosks were eventually produced, becoming an iconic feature of British streetscapes.
The kiosk stands in an open area to the north of The Strand, in front of the Swan Inn (a Grade II listed building). Approximately 15 metres to the west, across the road, are 4 & 5 Bridge Cottages (also Grade II listed). This prominent location creates a strong visual relationship between the kiosk and these two listed buildings. The K6 telephone kiosk is designated at Grade II for its strong visual relationship with other listed buildings and as a representative example of this important 20th-century industrial design within a village setting.
