Description

The Crown Inn is a late 18th century to early 19th century building located on Timbrell Street. It stands three storeys tall and is constructed of ashlar stone on a projecting plinth. The building features string courses at the first and second floor levels, a coved and moulded cornice, and a parapet with balustrade panels above the windows. The corner of the building has full-height angle strip pilasters, and the cornice is mitred at the corners. The roof is slate-covered.

The windows are glazing bar sash types, wider at the sides, with three windows on the upper floor and recessed reveals on the first floor. The ground floor has two windows with three-centred arched heads, although these are currently obscured by the pub's fascia and outside shutters. The central entrance features a six-panel door set within a three-centred arched opening, topped by a fanlight with a radiating and curved pattern. The doorcase is made of painted stone and includes three-quarter engaged Doric columns and an entablature, which is decorated with triglyphs and diamond ornament, a pulvinated frieze, a coved cornice, and a three-centred arched pediment with a patera in the tympanum. There is also a side door to the right and an ornate wrought iron projecting bracket for the inn sign.

The Crown Inn is part of a group with Nos 1 to 12 and the street wall to the south of No 1, as well as Nos 14 to 16.
