Description
Verger's Cottage, located at No 19 Vicarage, was built around 1868-70, likely designed by local architect William Smith. This two-storey building features an angled elevation and exhibits a diluted Gothic style. It has large gables flanking a smaller gable above the entrance, which is adorned with weatherboarding. The exterior is constructed from roughfaced rubble with a projecting plinth, quoins, and a chamfered string course over the ground floor.
On the first floor, there is a central square gabled ashlar oriel window above the doorway, along with three pointed windows. The ground floor includes two three-light windows with shouldered lintels, and the doorway is flanked by two narrow similar lights at the corners of the angle. The pointed doorway is supported by engaged columns on high bases that hold brackets for the oriel.
Verger's Cottage is part of a group that includes Nos 4 to 6 and Nos 8 to 18 York Buildings, which are of local interest, along with the gates to St Thomas's Church and two lamp standards located to the northwest and southwest.
