Description

A pair of cottages situated in Quidham Street, Bower Chalke, likely dating from the 15th century, with alterations made in the 17th century. They are constructed of rubble stone with a thatched roof, and have axial and gable end brick stacks. The cottages originally comprised three bays, probably with an open roofspace at one point. They now stand as a single-storey building with an attic, featuring four windows. A planked door is located to the left and right of the facade, alongside two 2-light casement windows and a more modern casement. Four eyebrow dormers light the attic, each containing a 2-light casement. The rear elevation also features 2-light casement windows.

The interior of No. 2 was inaccessible when surveyed in March 1986. No. 3 possesses very deep, chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and a central stack containing an open fireplace with a chamfered cambered lintel on stone jambs; a similar fireplace is believed to exist in No. 2. In the attic of No. 3, a raised cruck is exposed, displaying a cranked collar with a chamfered soffit, and large curved wind-braces are preserved on the north side of the east bay; a second cruck is rumored to be present in No. 2. The axial stack is a later addition into the centre bay.
