Description

This is an early 19th century red brick terrace of six buildings, numbered 54 to 58, on Castle Street. Numbers 55 to 58 form a unified architectural composition. The terrace originally housed weavers' workshops, as evidenced by the windows on the second floor. Stone cill bands are present, rising between numbers 56 and 57, and there are stone side piers to numbers 55 and 58. The first-floor windows have flush stone surrounds, and the doorway is similarly treated. Number 55 has two windows with late glazing sashes, while the others have one each. The remaining windows are glazing bar sashes, with the exception of number 54. The second-floor windows have been narrowed, except for number 56, which retains its original five-light casement window. The roof is shallow-pitched and covered in double roman tiles, with five brick ridge chimneys. Numbers 55 and 57 have painted ground floors, and the entire building at number 54 is painted. Modern shop fronts are present at numbers 54, 55, and 58; number 57 has two shops. Buildings 51 to 60, 60A and 61B are part of a group that also includes number 62 (Castle House) and the Court House, and number 51 is of local interest.
